SENSE course Grasping Sustainability, 10-13 March 2015
Editorial: International review highly positive about Dutch environmental and sustainability research
Environmental and sustainability research in the Netherlands is internationally considered to be of very high quality. More than 25% of the Dutch research groups under review belong to the world top of their field of research. The Dutch institutes are very positively assessed by the international reviewers and are strongly praised for their inclination to interdisciplinary cooperation and the societal relevance of the scientific research. The level of scientific excellence as well as the communicative and leadership qualities of the young professionals trained in environmental and sustainability research in the Netherlands are highly attractive to future employers, both nationally and internationally.

With these words we started our press release about the research review of the SENSE network, last summer. We are very happy our international peers evaluated our work so positively.

Call for PhD pitches at the SENSE symposium Carbon-Climate Interaction: from Science to Policy
On 12 January 2015 there will be a SENSE Symposium on Carbon-Climate Interactions. This symposium will host three keynote speakers: Sander Houweling (SRON, NL), Chris Jones (Met Office, UK), and Maarten van Aalst (Red Cross Climate Centre, NL). They will explain interactions between the carbon cycle and the climate system, how that science is represented in the IPCC climate models, and how the IPCC reports are used in real-life climate risk management.

PhDs working on (1) carbon cycle, (2) climate science, or (3) adaptation to climate change are invited to give a pitch.

Extended deadline for registration as a pitcher: 15 December 2014

Launch of the first two Plant-e systems, developed by SENSE alumna Marjolein Helder
On Wednesday November 5 the Netherlands was the first country in the world where lights were powered by living plants. At exactly 17:20 hrs CET the lights were switched on in Ede-Wageningen, home to the innovative young company Plant-e. Five minutes later the old ammunition site Hembrug near Amsterdam followed. The municipalities of Ede and Wageningen and the Central Government Real Estate Agency (owner of Hembrug) are Plant-e’s first customers and have switched on the lights that are powered by a modular plant-system. The first of its kind in the world.

Inaugural ISCU-WDS Data Stewardship Award for SENSE alumnus Dr. Xiaogang Ma
The WDS Data Stewardship Award highlights exceptional contributions to the improvement of scientific data stewardship by early career researchers through their engagement with the community, academic achievements, and innovations.
Marshall’s recent work on provenance of global change information addresses a crucial need for transparent scientific workflows and credible scientific findings, as global change information becomes both more abundant and increasingly important.

Looking back at the SENSE Writing Week 2014, looking forward to 2015!
From 3-7 November 2014 the annual SENSE Writing Week took place. This was the fouth year, and once again it was a success. With 20 participants from 13 different countries, it was international and stimulating. Everybode was able to focus their writing, and a lot of improvement was made in outlining projects, rivising parts of research papers, and improving their structure and clarity.

The SENSE Writing Week is a week for and by SENSE PhD candidates to fully concentrate on writing an article without the distraction of every day practice in a comfortable environment, with other PhD students and an English writing coach for motivation, feedback and social contacts.

If you would be interested to help organising the next edition of the SENSE Writing Week in 2015, then please contact dr. Ad van Dommelen: ad.van.dommelen@vu.nl. This organising activity may earn you credits for your Training and Supervision Plan, e.g. for your SENSE A2 project.
