EURO-AGRIWAT conference Water Footprint of agricultural products: progress, challenges and solutions, 7-9 March 2016
Editorial
Counting down to the UN Climate Change Conference 2015 (COP21) in Paris from 30 November till 11 December a lot is happening.

The Environmental Steering Panel of the EASAC, the European Academies' Science Advisory Council, formed by the national science academies of the EU Member States, published the statement "Facing critical decisions on climate change in 2015".
The statement relates to some of the scientific issues which will be very important to consider in the negotiations at COP21. The analysis concludes that recent evidence suggests some climate changes are proceeding faster than models would predicts - especially in the cryoshere. The national science academies of the EU Member States urge national goverments within Europe and the European Commission to play an active role in Paris in seeking a comprehensive agreement which will limit future warmin to below the 2 degrees target to avoid dangerous climate changes.

At different places local climate activities are organised: discussion meetings, movies, symposia, and even a climate game. You find some of these activities in the SENSE events calendar.

Of course there is more going on within the SENSE network.
SENSE is co-organisor of the international EURO-AGRIWAT conference Water footprint of agricultural products: progress, challenges and solutions, that will take place from 7-9 March 2016.
SENSE PhD candidates pay a reduced fee. The deadline for abstract submission is 30 November.

We hope to meet you at one of these events!

EURO-AGRIWAT conference Water Footprint of agricultural products: progress, challenges and solutions, 7-9 March 2016
Water represents a main resource for human activities and its management. Together with food and energy production, water scarcity is one of the most outstanding problems for society. In most European regions agricultural productions are intensive water consumers. Therefore, these systems are very vulnerable to a potential decrease in water availability.

In 2011 a European Concerted Reseach Action (COST) started, aimed at the Assessment of EUROpean AGRIculture WATer use and trade under climate change (EURO-AGRIWAT).

EURO-AGRIWAT intends to prepare and disseminate recommendations and guidelines for enabling a more efficient water resource management in relation with agricultural activities under climate change and variability, and involves collaboration between scientists and stakeholders.

The call for abstracts for oral contributions closes 30 November 2015.
Co-organised by SENSE.

The World needs Science, Science needs Women - Grants available for "Women in Science"
Each year, the Dutch L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship Programme awards two grants of maximum €25,000 to female scientists in the period up to ten years after receiving their doctoral degree (Vidi level) in the field of Life Sciences.

The participation of women in scientific research is essential for the economic, social and cultural development of a country. Even though women these days achieve the highest academic level, they are under-represented at all levels of scientific research. Despite excellent university results, relatively few women make it to strategic positions. The number of female professors in the Netherlands is 15,7% (2012), whereas the European target is 25%.

Since March 2012 the Dutch L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship are awarded each year with the help of the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) and the Dutch Network of Women Professors (LNVH) in order to contribute to the increase of the number of female professors in the long run. These grants are intended for a residency of three to five months at the NIAS campus to work on writing scientific articles. The NIAS campus is expected to move to the historical centre of Amsterdam in the summer of 2015.

Professional PhD Program vacancies
The Professional PhD Program (PPP) aims to provide opportunities for PhD candidates to work on their transferable skills. Currently the PhD track fully focuses on an academic career, while around 80 per cent of the people who finish their PhD will continue their career outside universities. In addition to this, companies and public organizations can experience the added value of a PhD candidate. Furthermore, PPP can strengthen the collaboration between universities and non-academic organizations.
The Professional PhD Program is an initiative by Promovendi Netwerk Nederland.

New vacancies
PhD Candidate (Promovendus) Automated feature extraction for cadastral boundary definition, ITC, Twente University, deadline 4 November
You will seek the development of a framework for (semi) automatic image interpretation using very-high resolution imagery, in the specific context of cadastral mapping. Very high resolution of UAV-based images (better than 5cm ground resolution) presents new possibilities for mapping. The human operator can easily recognize most objects in the imagery. However, for an efficient workflow, ideally objects of interest should be detected and extracted (semi) automatically from the imagery: this expedites the surveying and mapping process.

PhD Candidate (Promovendus) Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for cadastral mapping, ITC, Twente University, deadline 4 November
You will analyze the current status of UAV-flight regulations in several East African target countries and come up with designs for decision makers and practitioners for future regulations and workflows. You will also analyze the need for ground-truthing, and implement and test methods to mitigate the need for ground surveys. UAVs have reached a certain level of maturity for professional civil applications, including cadastral development. However, compared to established workflows based on manned airborne photography, key issues still hinder efficient use of UAVs in practice.
