Comprehensive overview of the various aspects of energy meteorology: From model field to power yield
The symposium “From model field to power yield” was organized @ Wageningen University on May 11, 2017. The topic of energy meteorology receives increasing attention, but there are few research and education groups that deal with it. One of the goals of the symposium was to establish a comprehensive overview of the various aspects of meteorology in the energy sector, that is now disseminated on the symposium website.

The symposium was organized by PhD students Arjan Droste & Peter Kalverla, and was sponsored by the SENSE and BBOS research schools.
SENSE group Environmental Technology (WU) contributes to sustainable urban development in China
The Environmental Technology Group of Wageningen UR (ETE) has started contributing to solve environmental problems related to big cities in China. In close collaboration with WIMEK (the Wageningen SENSE partner) and ETE, Tsinghua University will setup a new research institute in Suzhou, aimed at sustainable urban development. ETE researcher and SENSE PhD candidate Wei-Shan Chen is facilitating this collaboration using Dutch experience and technology.

Upcoming Courses
SENSE-Reims Summer School on Exploring the land-water continuum: coastal zones, river deltas, islands and wetlands, 2-7 July
The fourth edition of this successful Summer School focuses again on the governance of socio-ecological systems, which is a rapidly emerging issue in sustainability science. This edition specifically aims at bringing together scholars who integrate knowledge on both land and water centered socio-ecological systems, such as coastal zones, river deltas, islands and wetlands. Particular attention will be paid to the processes through which integrated policies are developed, implemented and evaluated.
Registration deadline: 1 June

Human induced Land Degradation, 2-10 September
Human induced soil degradation is a very actual and increasing problem all over the world. Population growth, unsustainable management of natural resources as well as increasing amounts of harmful chemicals in the environment lead to severe land and soil degradation. The phenomenon of soil degradation has to be considered in a socio-ecological context with respect to economic, cultural and social conditions. In this course, we use an interdisciplinary approach to learn about the different syndromes of soil degradation in different countries of the world and their consequences for people and the environment. Furthermore, we look for solutions and sustainable management strategies.

Discussion Groups
Wageningen Evolution and Ecology Seminars (WEES), 1 June
WEES is an initiative from PhD students and postdocs at Wageningen University to organize a continuing series of stimulating seminars on contemporary topics in evolution and ecology. We aim to bring together different groups at Wageningen University using a variety of systems, but with a common interest in evolutionary and ecological questions. For this series we invite researchers from all over the world that have leading roles in their field. After the talk there will be drinks for an informal discussion and a dinner in town with the speaker.

Research seminar Earth System Governance, 1 June
The Amsterdam Laboratory on Earth System Governance is a research seminar, hosted by the IVM section Environmental Policy Analysis, on new research in the area of environmental and earth-system governance. In weekly meetings, held each Thursday 12-13 hrs, participants will be given the opportunity to present and discuss their work, and receive valuable feedback. The research seminar will provide a regular opportunity to exchange views on new research directions, concepts, themes and methods in earth system governance research.

Plant-Soil Interaction Discussion group, 12 June
The Plant and Soil Interactions discussion group offers a platform to discuss the current and cutting edge research in plant and soil science. Meetings are aimed at facilitating networking and collaboration between young scientists researching many aspects of how soil and plants interact. Topics of the meetings are related to plant and soil research and are chosen according to the current interests of the group, e.g. topics involving nutrient and carbon cycling, plant interactions with soil biota or connections between the above and belowground communities.

R Users Discussion Group Meeting, 14 June
The R Users Meeting is a monthly meeting for people working with R. PhD and MSc students, as well as staff members, both beginners as well as advanced R users are welcome. The meeting offers an opportunity to help each other with specific questions and exchange ideas. In each meeting a specific topic is discussed by demonstrating and discussing examples of R functions and example data. The second part of each meeting is reserved for short questions on R codes and offers opportunity to get advice on your R code and how to fix or improve it.

SENSE-WIMEK Symposium Soil contamination: scope, advances and challenges, 1 September
This symposium is organised by SENSE PhD candidates Vera Silva, Mousumi Akter, Carlos Faúndez Urbina and Pavan Cornelissen (WUR) as their A2 project.

Soils are essential to life, playing important roles in several processes - climate and flood regulation, nutrient cycling, water purification, carbon sequestration, provision of food, fibre and fuel. However, our soils are exposed to several threats, such as contamination by heavy metals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals or even by saltwater. Soil contamination mainly occurs as a consequence of human activities, for example by the use of fertilizers, wastewater irrigation, or pesticides in agriculture. Soil contamination can also occur naturally, as in the case of saltwater intrusion.

Pollution of the soil can be hazardous to the health of humans, animals, and plants through direct exposure, or indirectly through contamination of ground- and surface water. The processes that occur in the soil are complex, as it is a mix of physicochemical and biological processes. Understanding these processes is important in order to determine and predict the fate of contaminants in the soil, and assess the risk to the public health or environment.

The key topics of this symposium are the transport and fate of contaminants in the soil, the related risk to human health or the environment, and remediation of the soil. The symposium will cover both experimental studies and modelling.

Registration and abstract submission should be done before 15th of July of 2017.

The symposium is free of charge. Registration is required.

Talent Scheme Information Meeting (Veni, Vidi, Vici), 6 July
NWO organises information meetings for researchers who want to apply for a Veni, Vidi of Vici grant. Practical information is given and selection committee members, NWO secretaries and researchers who have already acquired a Veni, Vidi or Vici share their experiences during a question and answer session. The meetings are in English. The next information meeting will be held on 6 July 2017.

The Talent Scheme has three types of grant for different phases in a researcher’s scientific career of researchers: Veni (recently gained PhD), Vidi (experienced) and Vici (professorial level). The aim of the Talent Scheme is to facilitate innovation in science. Talented, creative researchers receive the opportunity to do their own research and with that to qualify for a next step in their career.

Programme
All information relevant for the application can be found online: in our calls, on the website and in the notes on the application form. In addition to this, on Thursday 6 july there is an opportunity to meet the contact persons of the different science domains so that you know who you can approach with questions about forms or conditions.

During the Q&A session you can pose your questions to committee members, laureates and NWO secretaries. They like to share their experiences with you. For applicants with specific questions, it is possible to have a speeddate with a NWO secretary of the researchfield. There will also be several short sessions about other programmes that are interesting for young researchers, especially Rubicon and the ERC Starting Grants.

Blogpost: Is it possible to be a parent and have a career in research?
Many young researchers struggle with their work-life balance. Especially for researchers with a family, it is challenging to divide their time and energy between home and work. The question “is it possible to be a parent and have a career in research?” keeps many researchers up at night.

Professional PhD Program vacancies
The Professional PhD Program (PPP) aims to provide opportunities for PhD candidates to work on their transferable skills. Currently the PhD track fully focuses on an academic career, while around 80 per cent of the people who finish their PhD will continue their career outside universities. In addition to this, companies and public organizations can experience the added value of a PhD candidate. Furthermore, PPP can strengthen the collaboration between universities and non-academic organizations. The Professional PhD Program is an initiative by Promovendi Netwerk Nederland.
