Sharing a SENSE of Community |
A New Year has started and we wish all SENSE researchers an insightful and rewarding 2018!
One of the showcase examples of how PhD research can have both scientific and societal impact, can be found in the SENSE PhD Award 2017 that was decided by members of the SENSE Research Committee: we congratulate dr. Brenden Jongman on receiving the bi-annual SENSE PhD Award of 2017 for his PhD dissertation on Unravelling the Drivers of Flood Risk across Spatial Scales (2015). Brenden now works at the Worldbank in Washington and will be doing research in Madagascar in the next six months, thus carrying the impact of his research across the globe and to places where it matters most. More information on dr. Brenden Jongman and his excellent research can be found HERE.
Another excellent development of 2017 lies in the fact that the SENSE PhD Council (SPC) has further expanded its membership. We gratefully thank SENSE PhD candidates Dona Barirani and Yasmina Loozen (both Copernicus Institute, Utrecht University) for taking the lead in the past two years. And we welcome SENSE PhD candidates Lars de Ruig and Erick Velazquez (both Institute for Environmental Studies, Vrije Universiteit) as they are now taking the SPC leadership and coordination. For any questions or feedback, pls go the the SPC pages in the SENSE portal. If you are thinking about becoming an active member in SPC too, just send your email to: spcsense@gmail.com
Let’s make SENSE together!

Dr. Brenden Jongman (IVM/VU, Worldbank) receives SENSE PhD Award 2017 |
It is a pleasure to announce to you that the bi-annual SENSE PhD Award for best SENSE dissertation in previous two years, has been awarded to dr. Brenden Jongman for his PhD research on Unravelling the Drivers of Flood Risk across Spatial Scales (2015) at IVM, VU (with Prof. Jeroen Aerts, IVM as promotor and Dr. Philip Ward, IVM as co-promotor).
The awarding jury was Chaired by SENSE Director of Research, Prof. Max Rietkerk (Copernicus Institute, UU). Together with committee members Prof. Jacob de Boer (Head of Environment and Health, VU) and Dr. Maarten Krol (Dept. Water Engineering and Management, Twente University), the awarding jury’s choice was unanimous – even though the other nominated candidates have also produced excellent PhD dissertations. |

Re-imagining anticipatory climate governance in the world's vulnerable regions |
Faced with the realities of climate change, adaptation has become a key global focus. How do we deal with the changes that are already taking place and pre-empt those to come? What actions should be taken on a national and international level?
Led by Joost Vervoort (Utrecht University) and Aarti Gupta (Wageningen University & Research), the RE-IMAGINE project investigates ways in which various foresight approaches can play a role in appropriate and effective modes of anticipatory climate governance in the world's most vulnerable regions.

Grasping Sustainability, 12-16 March 2018 |
To date, many different scientific concepts and approaches of sustainability exist. What are the differences and what do they entail? What is your role as a scientist in achieving sustainable develop-ment? How can you apply sustainability in your own research? And in doing so, how can you deal with facts, uncertainty, values and opinions?
This on-site course will enable you to think about the ‘bigger picture’, grasp sustainability and to apply concepts and approaches to your own research, in a collaborative learning environment, away from ‘office’.
To ensure that the content of the course is aligned to your own research, the content of the course will also be determined by the research topics of the participants. |

A1 SENSE Introductory Course, 28-30 March 2018 |
What is my work good for? Even the most nerdish PhD student asks himself or herself this question once in a while. Is it just for the sake of science or does it relate to other research or even to environmental policy? What are my SENSE colleagues working on in other departments and other universities? How does their research relate to mine?
In the SENSE course 'Environmental Research in Context' several perspectives and approaches to analyse and to solve environmental problems are discussed. You will find out how your own research project fits within other (multi-) disciplinary approaches and you will discuss the advantages and the disadvantages of your approach compared to these alternatives.
In addition, you will evaluate some examples where questions from society were translated into scientific research projects in terms of relevance and scientific validity with experienced researchers and other PhD students. |
