Editorial

As a child I used to like line puzzles: connecting the dots to gradually see the broader picture take shape. The memory came into my mind when I considered the three major SENSE events that are planned in the upcoming months.

Within only a week a broad party of people working at municipalities, energy companies, university and more will gather in Wageningen for the SENSE conference Our Future Energy Landscape: How do we together take care of the sun and wind energy transition on land? on 20 June. As explained in the May edition of SENSE e-News this conference will be in Dutch because we want to reach out to society. And probably successfully, considering the pleasing number of registrations that continue to keep coming.

In October two events coincide, starting with the PhD Symposium Innovations for sustainability: Tackling water and climate change-related challenges, from 10-11 October at IHE Delft. We are very pleased that this IHE PhD event is open for any SENSE PhD candidate who takes interest in the subject. So please do not hesitate to send in your abstract before the submission deadline of 10 July!

On 11 October the more technological aspect that also is part of environmental research will get full attention in the SENSE symposium Innovative research techniques in Environmental Sciences: Making Sense from Sensors for SENSE at ITC Twente. From new research technologies at the level of DNA to earth observation using satellites, from tangible reality to artificial intelligence: come to present and listen to learn what’s new! You are invited to submit your abstract (deadline: 23 September).

Connecting the dots, I get a picture of the width of SENSE and also a continuum. From innovative research technologies to innovative solutions to sharing knowledge with society, as a process of how research may start and eventually find its way to society.
We hope to meet many of you in Wageningen, Delft or Enschede!

Joost Vervoort (UU) awarded Vidi grant to unlock the potential of games for sustainable societies
Dr Joost Vervoort (UU) has been awarded an NWO Vidi grant to research how simulation gaming can be used to experiment with new ways of organising sustainable future societies.
State and non-state actors around the world are urgently seeking new ways to reach global goals such as the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). But where do governments and other actors start when exploring the complex interdisciplinary challenges associated with achieving these goals?

Annemiek ter Heijne and Chiel van Heerwaarden (WUR) receive Vidi grants
The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) will award €800,000 each to Annemiek ter Heijne and Chiel van Heerwaarden (WUR). They will be able to use this money over the next five years to develop innovative research lines and to establish the accompanying research group.

Annemiek ter Heijne (Environmental Technology) will use the €800,000 to research how biological transitions can be made more efficient.

Chiel van Heerwaarden
(Meteorology and Air Quality) will begin research on cloud shadows.

Upcoming courses and discussion groups
Electron Microscopy course – The Basics: from A to W, 23-27 September
After this course, you will have insight into the possibilities of electron microscopy as a research tool and are able to decide whether you should use SEM, TEM or CLEM for your analysis. You will be able to operate an EM at basic level, make images and perform basic techniques of sample preparation. To benefit optimally from this course you will need some understanding of microscopes in general, but it is not necessary to have experience with EM.

Upcoming Events
SENSE conferentie Ons Toekomstige Energielandschap: Hoe zorgen we gezamenlijk voor de zon- en windenergietransitie op land? 20 June
Because of the target group of the conference, the main language will be Dutch

PhD Symposium Innovations for sustainability: Tackling water and climate change-related challenges, 10-11 October
We are pleased to announce the PhD symposium 2019 scheduled for 10th & 11th October, 2019 to be held at IHE Delft, Institute for Water Education. This symposium will provide a unique opportunity for PhD fellows/students to present their research to the IHE community.
The theme for the 2019 PhD symposium is “Innovations for Sustainability”.

SDGs cannot be achieved without new ways to respond to the interrelated environmental, societal, and economic challenges we are facing today.
Overcoming these challenges requires us to think of innovative and smarter solutions that can have positive impact on sustainable development.

Deadline for submission of abstracts: 10 July

The National Postdoc Prize consists of a monetary award of EUR 10,000 and a certificate.

Laureates may spend this amount at their discretion on their own research or on research conducted under their supervision.

The National Postdoc Prize is intended for postdoc researchers and assistant professors at a Dutch university or Dutch research institute who have received their PhD no more than five years previously. University assistant professors may also compete in some cases.
