Editorial

A diverse company of policy makers, scientists and other stakeholders joined the SENSE Conference on Energy Landscapes at 20 June, chaired by Ernst Worrell (UU). The keynotes covered numerous aspects of the energy transition necessary to meet the Paris goals on CO2 reduction. Topics ranged from the transition process and spatial integration of solar and wind parks to the relation with biodiversity and democratic processes.

"Diverse landscape."A broad ranges of issues was subject of lively discussions during the four parallel sessions, and the participants left us with an informative overview of knowledge gaps related to the energy transition. We hope this conference was not a one-off event, but the start of a closer, transdisciplinary cooperation between scientists and society. We are currently considering what follow-up activities would have the most added value to both scientists and policy makers involved in the energy transition.
The framework of a bridge between science and society has been built.

For those interested: most presentations, and cartoons of the event made by cartoonist Herman Roozen, are still available at the SENSE website: www.sense.nl/energielandschap. (Most, but not all, in Dutch.)

Although words form a powerful means of communication, maybe other forms are equally or even more powerful, at least at the emotional level. I was amazed and impressed by the way SENSE professor and Spinoza winner Marten Scheffer (WUR) opened the European Climate Change Adaptation Conference last May. I won’t give away what you are going to experience, but I can recommend to watch the video, maybe at a moment you got stuck and could do with some inspiration.

And when you feel relaxed and inspired after watching Marten’s performance, you might want to break out of your routine yourself. That might be the right moment to subscribe for the SENSE Beach Walk on 17 August in Scheveningen.

I wish all of you a refreshing summer!

4 million euro for training programme new experts in wildfires (WUR)
The past two years were characterized by deadly wildfires in Southern Europe and an increasing number of wildfires in northern regions. This is a glimpse of what is expected in the future. The European Union assigns a 4 million euro grant to PyroLife, a project in which a new generation of experts will be trained in integrated wildfire management. Wageningen University & Research (WUR) will coordinate the project.

Upcoming courses and discussion groups
Electron Microscopy course – The Basics: from A to W, 23-27 September
After this course, you will have insight into the possibilities of electron microscopy as a research tool and are able to decide whether you should use SEM, TEM or CLEM for your analysis. You will be able to operate an EM at basic level, make images and perform basic techniques of sample preparation. To benefit optimally from this course you will need some understanding of microscopes in general, but it is not necessary to have experience with EM.

We are pleased to announce the PhD symposium 2019 scheduled for 10th & 11th October, 2019 to be held at IHE Delft, Institute for Water Education. This symposium will provide a unique opportunity for PhD fellows/students to present their research to the IHE community.
The theme for the 2019 PhD symposium is “Innovations for Sustainability”.

SDGs cannot be achieved without new ways to respond to the interrelated environmental, societal, and economic challenges we are facing today.
Overcoming these challenges requires us to think of innovative and smarter solutions that can have positive impact on sustainable development.

National Postdoc Prize
The National Postdoc Prize was established in 2017 by The Young Academy and the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW) as an incentive for postdoc researchers and assistant professors who conduct excellent scientific research that could have a major impact on society.
The National Postdoc Prize consists of a monetary award of EUR 10,000 and a certificate.

Laureates may spend this amount at their discretion on their own research or on research conducted under their supervision.

The National Postdoc Prize is intended for postdoc researchers and assistant professors at a Dutch university or Dutch research institute who have received their PhD no more than five years previously. University assistant professors may also compete in some cases.

The deadline for submitting nominations is 15 July 2019.
