Grasping Sustainability, 9-13 March 2020
A1 SENSE Introductory Course, 25-27 March 2020
SENSE Writing Week, 30 March - 3 April 2020
Editorial

Dear SENSE’ers,

After not making any new year resolutions that I can break within the month of January, I can honestly say that in 2020, apart from having a US type of election year sound, we as SENSE are making exciting plans. Not only at the courses we as staff are organizing (see the pre-announcements for courses on Plastics and Human induced land degradation). The SENSE PhD council has organized the SENSE writing week again (Writing Week 2020!); and at the Microbiology group in Wageningen, a PhD candidate has organized a course on the use of Python and Linux in bioinformatics. This course is so in demand in their group, that is it is fully booked. After this course is held, we will make an inventory who in the SENSE network in interested in this course, so perhaps we can organize it again soon. I have also received word of PhD candidates wanting to organize a symposium in their field of expertise. These initiatives show that will a small group of interested PhD candidates, and an idea who can teach and/or lead it, SENSE can quickly help you organize a new event.

Otherwise, the chances are that you are only going to be spammed by courses I coordinate (Grasping Sustainability any one?; the A1 course in March 2020?). Which seems like an appealing idea to me, but in the light of the need for diversity on all sorts of fronts, probably is not the best approach to get a complete course offering at the SENSE level. So, do not hesitate to contact your fellow PhD candidates, your supervisors, your local graduate school and SENSE if you have any good ideas!

Enjoy Y2020!

Upcoming courses
Institutions and Societal Transformation, 18 February - 05 March 2020
The Interdisciplinary Window (IW) Institutions and Societal Transformation engages students with an integrative debate on the entanglement of institutional rigidity and societal transformation. It examines and compares theory-led research on the roles of institutions in addressing complex and persistent societal challenges. It uses ‘institution’ as a bridging concept in the social sciences and focuses on the development and merits of diverse institutional theories. Students learn how to position their interest in debates within or between distinct schools researching institutions and processes through which societies gain order or produce disorder.

Tidy data transformation and visualization with R - tidyverse and ggplot, 24-26 February 2020
It is often mentioned that 80% of a data analysis pipeline is involved with the tedious process of cleaning and preparing data in a correct way so they can be consumed for analysis and visualization. Tidy data facilitates easier data transformation and visualization. Tidy data works hand in hand with the tools provided by the tidyverse collection of R packages, in a way that promotes reproducibility and efficiency. ggplot2 is one of the core members of the tidyverse. It is one of the best and most used R packages for data visualization. In this workshop, participants will learn the principle of tidy data, how to transform and combine datasets using the tools from the tidyverse and how to generate advanced visualization with the ggplot2 package.

Workshop Introduction to data handling and modelling in Python, 2 March 2020
In this course the mathematical and modelling expertise of prof. Karel Keesman will be combined with the python skills of Caspar Geelen to teach you how to use python to analyse your data as well as fit a model through your data using (linear) regression or custom model equations. The course will consist of short lectures of theory, python applications of said theory, hands-on exercises and coffee breaks, interchangeably.

Pathways to Sustainability Conference: Accelerating the Transformation, 5 March 2020
We are confronted daily by alarming news of the climate crisis, vast biodiversity loss, faster than predicted thawing ice and permafrost, natural resource shortages, and rising social inequality. We are increasingly aware that the pathways to sustainability require an extraordinary effort. The third Pathways to Sustainability Conference is therefore devoted to the theme of ‘accelerating the sustainability transformation’.

Urban Resilience in a context of Climate Change Conference, 9-10 March 2020
We already live in a world of cities, and that trend is expected to continue. While cities are becoming smarter, they can still be very vulnerable and fragile, with basic services failing when different kinds of impacts occur.

General assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), 3-8 May 2020
The EGU General Assembly 2020 will bring together geoscientists from all over the world to one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, planetary and space sciences. The EGU aims to provide a forum where scientists, especially early career researchers, can present their work and discuss their ideas with experts in all fields of geoscience. The EGU is looking forward to cordially welcoming you in Vienna.
