Editorial

Dear member of the SENSE community,

Although it is nerve racking to perform research with restrictions and great uncertainties, you can hold on to the fact that you are doing research to improve this world. For instance, do you remember Super Cyclone Amphan hitting southwest Bangladesh on May 20th 2020? Uthpal is a Bangladeshi SENSE PhD candidate who currently stays in Khulna, Bangladesh. His research in the WaterApps project is on weather and climate information services, which helped local farmers prepare before the cyclone hit. All of the farmers involved in the project harvested in time and have minimal damages.

Furthermore, we have good news from our SENSE microbiologists. Together with Wageningen University & Research and the Delft University of Technology, the Dutch Research Council (NWO) will invest almost 25 million euros in research facility UNLOCK to study mixed microbial communities and their application. The research facility was approved and consists of equipment and human resources that will be used to gather knowledge on micro-organisms effectively.

Keep up the spirit and let yourself be inspired by this e-news.

SENSE communication officer

Upcoming courses
COVID-19 update
Registration is open for the courses below. They will probably be re-organized in such a way that the courses can be held online. However, there is a chance that they will be postponed.

Linear models, 9-11 June 2020
In this module we continue with Regression, ANOVA, and ANCOVA, set in the general framework of Linear Models.

Generalized Linear Models, 15-16 June 2020
Study how to analyse data that are not normally distributed. Look at fractions (logistic regression), counts (Poisson regression, log-linear models), ordinal data (threshold models), and overdispersion.

Mixed Linear Models, 22-23 June 2020
Study how to analyse dependent data, that is, data for which the assumption of independence needed in Linear Models is violated.

Introduction to Data Science with R and R Studio 24-26 June 2020
Participants will be introduced to R language syntax, enabling them to write their own R code.

Meta-analysis, 1-2 July 2020
Learn concepts of linear models and mixed linear models in meta-analysis, using R.

Upcoming Events
COVID-19 update
Events are being re-organized to digital editions.

Pyrolife symposium: Towards an Integrated Fire Management
The goal of this symposium is to create new international links across scientific fields and disciplines, in order to get a better view on what Integrated Fire Management across Europe should look like. While this symposium is the scientific start of the Pyrolife ITN training network, researchers and interested parties from other institutes are warmly invited to join this meeting, so allow for more connections to be made.
