Seventeenth International Conference on Environmental, Cultural, Economic & Social Sustainability
Editorial

Daylight is sparse and winter is coming. During Christmas holidays most of us spend time with friends and family instead of going to work. The foreigners amongst you might be unable to see their beloved ones. Nevertheless, we hope that all of you will have a warm, cosy, merry Christmas. And for a happy new year we will have inspiring courses and events coming up!

Message from local PhD council

With WIMEK PhDers we had an online event called "Pictionary in a green world". Participants draw a wide range of environmental words such as algal blooms and solar eclipse. Everyone draw in a team, so two people together tried to visualize their word while the others guessed. Besides, we discussed the buddy system and different ways to meet in corona time. Overall it was a fun and relaxing afternoon which showed us that it is very important to keep meeting other PhDers!

Ethics for Social Sciences Research, 7 December 2020
This training focuses on ethical issues that are encountered specifically in research with human subjects. After identifying ethical principles for social sciences research on the basis of one specific case (brought in by the lecturer), participants will discuss their own research proposals. Interactions and feedback are tailored to the topics that are relevant to the research projects op the participants. Participants are informed about the procedures for receiving ethical approval from the Social Sciences Ethics Committee and adjust their own study protocol (including informed consent sheets) for meeting the ethics requirements prescribed by this committee.

We recommend taking this course in combination with Research Integrity (RI), which focuses on key principles of good science and good scientific conduct, and on (ways of coping with) integrity tensions.
