Last month the programme of the SENSE Summer Symposium of 18 June was almost finalised. We found four interesting keynote speakers, from business, consultancy and the SENSE network, who will share their visions with us about "stakeholder interaction in sustainability research" and "improving societal impact by social media and citizen participation".
Next to that we will have 10 workshops that address the same themes in quite different ways.
We are confident that we developed an interesting programme that can really contribute to enhancing our insights in how to successfully improve the impact of SENSE research.
We will update you in a special issue of SENSE e-News later this month, when registration is open. > Read more
Some PhDs have impact even before they start their PhD research. In 2013-2014 Roxani Chatzipanagiotou (WU) participated in the SENSE Honours Programme for excellent MSc students. With her Master thesis on "Overcoming the issues for vehicles CO2 capturing" she made it to the final of the Shell Bachelor Master Prijs. Everyone is invited to vote for the public award of this prize. > Read more
Last but not least we want to gratulate SENSE senior member Mark Huijbregts (RU) with his €2 billion grant from the European Research Council for his researchy for the development of a new method to determine the impact of technologies. |

Improvement of career perspectives on the policy agenda: Take your advantage |
In the past few months, the career development of young scientists has been in the spotlights. It gained the attention of the government: in the Vision for Science 2025 [EN/NL], the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science urges for the improvement of the career perspectives for scientists. Policy makers in academia also discuss about this topic and first intentions to improve the career perspectives have been expressed in the new Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch universities. What the exact implementation will be, is still unclear but be aware that the time is more favourable than ever to negotiate for (means to support) your professional development. Read the post by PCDI director Lilian Menu to learn more and take your advantage!

PhD Candidate (Promovendus) Air quality mapping in space and time, University of Twente, deadline 15 March |
Air quality is of an increasing concern nowadays. It is more and more realized that a low quality has severe consequences for human health. Air quality is usually expensive to monitor as the spatial and temporal density of monitoring networks is limited and not sufficient to address current problems. This has led to the development of innovative, low cost sensor networks. These measure air quality at fine temporal and spatial resolutions. The AiREAS civil initiative (www.aireas.com) has installed such a network in the Dutch city of Eindhoven. It consists of 35 monitoring stations, located throughout the city and measures air quality at a 10 minute interval. |

Four Post Doc Positions, Leuphana University, Lüneburg, Germany, deadline 10 March |
Leuphana University Lüneburg’s Faculty of Sustainability is advertising four postdoctoral positions. They will contribute to the transdisciplinary Leverage Points project. Drawing on insights from systems thinking and solution-oriented transdisciplinary research, this project will focus on hitherto underrecognized leverage points – system properties where a small shift can lead to fundamental changes in the system as a whole. Leverage Points will focus on changes in relatively intractable, but potentially highly influential, system properties that could help to realign complex social-ecological systems to the normative goals of sustainability. |
