Editorial
Summer is a season of activity and growth. It can also invite us to take some other routes than we usually do. Such diversions can take many forms: maybe you visit new places, or meet new people, or read new books.

One of the ‘take home messages’ resulting from the recent SENSE Summer Symposium (on 18 June in Wageningen) was about ‘personal development and leadership’: keynote speaker Miriam van Gool urged us all to entertain good connections between ‘brain and heart’ as a necessary basis for the much-needed excellent leadership in sustainable development. The Symposium was a great success, with challenging Keynote speakers and workshop conveners. A photo impression of this meeting is available as a Picasa album (with special thanks to Mengru Wang).

Part of the Symposium programme was the announcement of the SENSE PhD Award 2015: we congratulate dr. Nora Sutton with her excellent work, which was highly appreciated by the SENSE Research Committee. Not only the content of her dissertation, but also the fact that she actively made use of the larger SENSE network was explicitly mentioned as a part of the appreciation by the selection committee.

Considering the ambition to improve connections between ‘heart and brain’, we should not forget to mention here the upcoming 2nd SENSE Sports Day. On Saturday 4th July a ‘beach volleyball’ competition has been organized by the SENSE PhD council in Delft (with excellent weather). This will be a great occasion for Summer diversion and perhaps (only if you respond TODAY), there may still be room for another team or audience member for this event.

As a final consideration for this Summer edition of the SENSE e-News: please do not forget to read books and give your mind some substance to wander new routes. Recently I enjoyed reading a book with the title: “Don’t even think about it: why our brains are wired to ignore climate change” (see review). If anyone would like to sit together and discuss this book after the Summer, please let us know. Meanwhile: enjoy the Summer, both brain and heart.

Nora Sutton (WUR-ETE) receives SENSE PhD Award 2015
During the SENSE Summer Symposium on 18 June, the 2015 SENSE PhD Award was presented to Dr. Nora Sutton for her thesis: "Microbiological and geochemical dynamics of the subsurface: chemical oxidation and bioremediation of organic contaminants".

“The work of Nora Sutton is an exception as it takes a rather fundamental science approach which sheds new light on the underlying processes which will have impact on the practice of remediation.”

Congratulations to you all and good luck with writing your PhD research proposal!

Discussion Groups
Reading group Environmental Economics, Amsterdam, 8 July
A reading group with PhD students in the field of Environmental Economics. The idea is to broaden our knowledge and learn from other topics in the field. Therefore, each presents a paper that someone else added to the list and that is not primarily covered in his/her own PhD project. This way, you learn about other topics and methods and there will always be someone to help you explain things (the person that added the paper to the list). An informal presentation of 20 mins will be followed by discussion of the paper of 40 mins.

Tips
How best to respond to reviewers

Comments from referees reviewing a paper can sometimes be less than polite, making it tempting for authors to send equally rude replies. But a trio of blog posts emphasizes the importance of professional, constructive responses from authors. The posts, by three ecologists, aim to help researchers to avoid common pitfalls that can lower their chances of publication. See:
