Call for nominations: SENSE MSc Honours Programme 2017-2018
The SENSE MSc Honours Programme prepares MSc highly motivated students for an academic research career and gives the research groups the opportunity to supervise an excellent student with a high chance of obtaining a PhD candidate. The MSc honours students write a full PhD research proposal within the field of ‘Environmental and Sustainability Sciences’ under supervision of a coach and several professional trainers.

In total, 15 students can be admitted to the SENSE MSc Honours Programme. MSc student supervisors, teachers and MSc programme coordinators can nominate excellent students by sending in a recommendation letter, a motivation letter, exam results and CV of the MSc student. The nominations can be send to Monique Gulickx (monique.gulickx@wur.nl).

Nomination deadline: 1 June 2017

More information about the programme and the nomination procedure can be found on our website: http://www.sense.nl/honours

We look forward to the class of 2017-2018 with motivated and inventive MSc Honours students!

ERC Advanced Grant for Maarten Krol (WIMEK WU)
Maarten Krol (WU, Meteorology and Air Quality) has just received a grant of 2.5 million euros for excellent science from the European Commission for his research proposal on carbonyl sulphide: new ways of observing the climate system. Our understanding of the atmospheric carbonyl sulphide budget is limited. The new research of Maarten Krol and his team from Wageningen University and the universities of Utrecht and Groningen could be a major step forward in our ability to understand atmospheric carbonyl sulphide and thus to diagnose photosynthetic CO2 uptake.

Global Centre of Excellence on Climate Adaptation in The Netherlands
On February 6th the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment signed a Statement of Intent together with global partners of the new project 'Global Centre of Excellence on Climate Adaptation in The Netherlands'. UNESCO-IHE is one of the parties involved in the establishment of the Centre, aiming to contribute with its expertise in capacity development.

The SENSE Research School has also shown its interest in collaboration with GCEC and will be invited for a bilateral meeting to investigate the options for future collaboration.

Kees Klein Goldewijk (Copernicus Institute UU): Valorisation: Teaching primary schools kids about Global Trade and Globalisation
Once a while you get a chance to talk to a completely different public about your work, and I don’t mean in the pub or at birthday parties. In this case, I was given the opportunity to give a lecture to 12 year old kids from group 8. When the teacher once had dinner at our place we talked about the possibility to come over there and give a lecture about Global trade and Globalisation, which to my surprise, was an integral part of a new teaching system called IPC. The main feature of this system is that many topics are handled in so-called projects, and one of these projects was indeed about (fair) trade, globalisation, etc.

Jetske Vaas (Copernicus Institute UU): Upon leaving Statia
Back in 2016, I arrived in Statia, aka The Golden Rock, aka The historic gem of the Caribbean. And today the time has come to pack up the suitcase that has contained my life for the past four months and head back to Holland. Two months in Statia were over before I knew it, and admittedly also before I got round to doing everything on my list.

Upcoming Courses
SENSE-Reims Summer School on Exploring the land-water continuum: coastal zones, river deltas, islands and wetlands, 2-7 July
The fourth edition of this successful Summer School focuses again on the governance of socio-ecological systems, which is a rapidly emerging issue in sustainability science. This edition specifically aims at bringing together scholars who integrate knowledge on both land and water centered socio-ecological systems, such as coastal zones, river deltas, islands and wetlands. Particular attention will be paid to the processes through which integrated policies are developed, implemented and evaluated.

Discussion Groups
Discussion group Landscape Dynamics: "Bike tour through the surroundings of Wageningen", 31 March
The landscape is shaped by interacting physical, chemical and biological processes. These range from tectonic processes over millions of years to extreme events which change the landscape in a matter of seconds. The impact of humans on the landscape can be direct but also indirect, by affecting the natural processes. Therefore, understanding the landscape dynamics requires an interdisciplinary view ranging over multiple spatial and temporal scales.

The discussion group ‘Landscape Dynamics’ focuses on the past, present and future dynamics of the physical landscape. During the proactive meetings, different themes will be introduced by a speaker and discussed using several propositions. Example of themes are feedbacks between soil, water, atmosphere and vegetation, the human factor in earth sciences or the issue of up- and downscaling in modelling natural processes.

BBOS spring symposium on energy meteorology: From model field to power yield, 11 May
This symposium is organised by SENSE PhD candidates Arjan Droste and Peter Kalverla (WU, Meteorology and Air Quality Group)

We would like to draw your attention to the Energy Meteorology Symposium organised on 11 May (2017) at Wageningen University. Both Dutch and international speakers will discuss a range of topics related to the role of meteorology in the (renewable) energy sector.

A symposium on renewable energy and the role of meteorology therein

Climate change, air quality issues, political instability and the exhaustive nature of fossil fuels all contribute to the notion that alternative energy sources should be exploited. Accordingly, governments have made appointments that are directed towards implementation of renewable energy systems. Over the past years, we have seen rooftops being covered with solar panels, and meadows populated with wind turbines. However, there is more to such a large transition than meets the eye. During this symposium, we hope to shed some light on the science and policy of renewable energy. We especially focus on the meteorology, that plays a key role in resource estimation, power prediction and load assessments.
