How can SENSE scientists increase their societal impact?
The International Review Committee (Review of SENSE Research School 2014) underlined the importance of good communicative efforts between scientific researchers and policy makers, business representatives and relevant stakeholders. They have recommended us as SENSE Research School to strengthen our research by increasing our societal impact. We have received this recommendation heartily and strongly recognise the importance of improving the relevance of our research to society.

Now three years later, we are very curious how we are doing. Later this year we will have a special e-News edition on Societal impact of SENSE research. Will you let us know your successes?

Please, send us how you have (potentially) increased the societal impact of your research to Marjolijn Dannenburg and we will share it in the special e-News on Societal impact of SENSE research!

Do you want to improve your skills to increase your societal impact? SENSE has developed the PhD course ‘Making an Impact – How to increase the societal relevance of your PhD research’. The next edition will be 16-17 October, for more information and registration go to: Website PhD course Making an Impact

A1 SENSE Introductory Course, 4-6 October
What is my work good for? Even the most nerdish PhD student asks himself or herself this question once in a while. Is it just for the sake of science or does it relate to other research or even to environmental policy? What are my SENSE colleagues working on in other departments and other universities? How does their research relate to mine?
In the SENSE course 'Environmental Research in Context' several perspectives and approaches to analyse and to solve environmental problems are discussed. You will find out how your own research project fits within other (multi-) disciplinary approaches and you will discuss the advantages and the disadvantages of your approach compared to these alternatives.
Registration deadline: 6 September

Making an Impact! How to increase the societal relevance of your PhD research, 16-17 October
The societal relevance of sustainability research has become a crucial aspect in the evaluation of research proposals. Demonstrating the societal impact of research has become a core element in the assessment of research results.
For these reasons, many PhD-candidates working on sustainability issues are motivated to ensure that their research has an impact.

Engaging with societally relevant activities is quite a challenge, requiring a suite of skills. In this intensive, interactive course, you will discover ways to combine fundamental research with societal impact activities. You will benefit both personally and socially, gaining valuable experience at the interface of research, policy and society, highly relevant for your future career.

MOOC: Citizens co-creating sustainable cities, 10 October - 5 December
Around the world, major challenges of our time such as population growth and climate change are being addressed in cities. Here, citizens play an important role amidst governments, companies, NGOs and researchers in creating social, technological and political innovations for achieving sustainability.

This MOOC will teach you about the dynamics of co-creation and the key principles of citizens interacting with service providing companies, technology and infrastructure developers, policy makers and researchers. You will gain an understanding of major types of co-creation and their interdependency with their socio-technical and political contexts. You will become equipped to indicate how you can use co-creation to develop innovative technologies, policy arrangements or social practices for a sustainable city in your own community. You will demonstrate this by developing an action plan, research proposal or project idea.

Microbiology Centennial Symposium: Exploring Microbes for the Quality of Life, 18-20 October
Wageningen University & Research is celebrating 100 years of scientific progress in exploring microbes for the quality of life. For the last 25 years we have focused on molecular ecology, microbial physiology and bacterial genetics and notably their integration. These subject areas will form the core of the scientific program that is initiated by overviews of microbial interactions with the biotic and abiotic environment and is closed with an outlook on the future.
This exciting symposium will provide you with a state of the art overview of many important areas in microbial research, varying from novel anaerobic conversions to intestinal microbiology and extremophiles research to genome editing.
Extended deadline for abstract submittance: 1 September

This symposium is organised by the SENSE group Microbiology (WUR) and is financially supported by the Wageningen SENSE partner WIMEK
