EVENT: SENSE symposium 2023 “Science and Impact”, 15 November 2023
Editorial

Welcome to our November SENSE newsletter. Our yearly SENSE symposium is just around the corner with the topic Science and impact. How to achieve impact with your research is a topic that is currently under a lot of discussion and we hope to gain some more clarity about ways to achieve impact during our symposium.

We also feature two courses about colonialism, one focused on decolonizing science and the other on the impact of colonialism on climate change. Both courses illustrate the far reaching effects of colonialism and how it is sadly not quite a thing of the past yet.

This newsletter we also have a blog from Janine de Wit where she tells about her experiences during a summerschool on Soil-crop models at Kassel University.

We hope that this newsletter provides a lot of inspiration and we hope to see many of you in two weeks at the SENSE symposium!

Upcoming courses and discussion groups
Five-part course Climate Change & Colonialism | 16 November - 14 December 2023
It has been called the biggest and most threatening crisis of our time: the climate crisis. Did you know that the choices made in the Dutch colonial past have a huge impact on our current climate policy? For a long time, the industrial revolution was mainly referred to as the historical starting point of man-made climate change.

This event will be held in Dutch.

System, Sustainability and Societal Aspects in the Energy Transition | 20 - 21 November 2023
This course is focused on PhD students and will combine lectures and workshops. This course will be provided by academic researchers and different stakeholders from industry/company, municipalities, and governmental bodies.

Decolonising science: course for PhD candidates | 27 November - 01 December 2023
The course aims to inspire PhD candidates to explore and engage with decolonial, anti-colonial and postcolonial approaches in their current research. The course is open to Netherlands-based students at higher education institutions affiliated with the SENSE network. It targets students of engineering, natural and social sciences who are engaged with research on environmental issues – involving sectors such as water, forests, agriculture, and more. We especially encourage Netherlands-based women candidates and students from post-colonial countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America to apply. The course is divided into three segments, each engaging with critical aspects of doctoral research: theory, methodology, and fieldwork (see schedule). The course also includes screenings of films and documentaries that showcase how colonialism shaped scientific knowledge traditions and how to reclaim and celebrate diverse knowledge systems and practices.

Modelling and Computation for Micro-organisms in Bioprocesses | 27 November - 01 December 2023
This course brings together contributions from different disciplines, i.e. bioprocess technology, applied physics, transport phenomena, molecular biology and biomedical sciences. They all address different elements on the coupling between several time and length scales in the simulation of different bioprocesses (e.g. bioreactor and bioprocess operation, microbial strain improvement, tissue and organ cultivation, plant design and integration). Computational methods will deepen the understanding of the connecting principles between different scales. The industrial relevance is underlined by the venue being the Biotech Campus Delft.

Geostatistics | 04 - 08 December 2023
Geostatistics is concerned with the analysis and modelling of spatial variability. It also addresses how quantified spatial variability can be used in optimal spatial interpolation and spatial stochastic simulation. Fields of application include geology, soil science, agronomy, ecology, forestry, hydrology, climatology and geography. This course aims to provide PhD candidates with a solid background in standard and more advanced geostatistical methods, such that they can apply these methods in their own research. The course is a mix of theory and practice, with case studies that are analysed using R and contributed geostatistical packages. The course material is a selection of journal papers and book chapters, which are made available at the start of the course.

SENSE symposium 2023 “Science and Impact”, 15 November 2023
We live in challenging times, pressing socio-environmental radical transformations and escalating hydro-climatic extreme events menace our future. Scientist and academics have a central responsibility to navigate and respond to these complex threats. The role of scientists in addressing complex “wicked” sustainability problems is not only relegated to analytical efforts, it also entails normative questions, relations of power, positionality and representation. But how can scientist produce impact, influence decisions and be societally involved, while maintaining their academic role and standards? This is the overarching question that will characterize the SENSE symposium organized around a Keynote Lecture of Prof. Lyla Mehta, three different workshops on Communication and Creativity, Activism and Career Development and a PhD student posters session.

We hope you will join and look forward to having fruitful and inspiring discussions!

Rural Aotearoa New Zealand: the transition to resilient farm systems by focusing on wellbeing and the environment
Seminar: Dr. Jorie Knook | 16 November 2023, 12.00 | Leeuwenborch room 68

Dr. Jorie Knook is a lecturer at the Department of Land Management and Systems at Lincoln University, Aotearoa New Zealand. Her research focuses on landowner behaviour in which she studies the uptake of practices, beliefs and values. She is particularly passionate about studying agro-ecological and social transitions, such as the role of interventions in establishing change around mental wellbeing and alternative land-uses such as agroforestry. More info about Dr. Knook: https://researchers.lincoln.ac.nz/jorie.knook

Join in for the seminar and discussion. For more info, contact Marijn.Poortvliet@wur.nl
